|THE ALABASTER CRAFTSMAN: A CRAFT TO DISCOVER AGAIN
The co-operative society Artieri Alabastro organizes guided visits in it's workshop, for groups, schoolchildren or students, with the aim to give currency to a form of excellent artistic craftsmanship as the alabaster craftsmanship. A didactic way to learn about the different phases of the manufacture of this precious stone.
You will see the turner craftsman, with his ability, transforming a simple piece of alabaster into a vase, a bowl or an egg.
Or admire the sculptor while carving, with short and precise strokes, an animal or a free-hand decoration of a vase or a plate.
You will also see the finishing phases which transforms every item into a unique piece.
The large historical room , where manufactured articles from the over hundred years old history of the co-operative society are displayed, is also used as video room. The visit can, in fact, be preceded by the projection of a film about Volterra and the alabaster manufacture..
The co-operative society has also two show rooms. One is situated next to the workshop and another one is situated in the main square of Volterra, Piazza dei Priori.
We also have a wide parking with place for six buses. Furthermore we have a picnic area for our visitors.
The territory of Alta Val di Cecina, besides Volterra affords other interesting places to visit: Larderello with its boric acid fumaroles which produces 25% of the electricity in Tuscany and its geothermal museum. The copper mine in Montecatini Val di Cecina with its museum. Two important stages to show our children which resources the earth offers.
